BASC member Sarah-Jane Longbottom was presented with a Special Presentation Award from the association in recognition of her exceptional work to involve more women in shooting.
A dedicated BASC member of more than 15 years, Sarah-Jane Longbottom has been a driving force for inclusivity and participation within shooting. Sarah is passionate about bringing more women into the sport, and has provided long-standing support for the shooting community in Somerset and beyond.
She is the founder of Somerset Lady Guns, one of the South West’s first dedicated female shooting groups. Through it, she created a welcoming space where women could build skills, confidence and become part of a network of other likeminded people.
Under Sarah-Jane’s leadership, Somerset Lady Guns thrived. From simulated clay days to driven game shoots and educational social events, she led with passion and purpose. Her energy helped many women make the transition from clay to game shooting while deepening their understanding of conservation and countryside management.
Her commitment went far beyond the range and field. Sarah-Jane regularly hosted gatherings at her home, welcoming the BASC South West team to brief members on key issues in shooting, conservation and legislation. These events also gave members hands-on learning experiences, from rifle shooting and deer stalking to preparing game.
Although Somerset Lady Guns concluded after 15 successful years, its legacy continues to inspire women across the rural community. Alongside her leadership of the group, Sarah-Jane also served on the BASC Somerset Committee, helping to organise social events, raise funds for charity and champion key issues affecting shooters and conservationists.
BASC South West regional officer Sam Walker said: “Sarah-Jane’s contribution to shooting in the region has been truly remarkable. Through her generosity and commitment, she has created lasting opportunities for women to get involved in the sport and has enthusiastically supported BASC’s work at every level. This award is a well-deserved recognition of her efforts.”
Huge congratulations from all at BASC to Sarah-Jane on her Special Presentation Award.
