A flat coated retriever from Devon was crowned overall winner of BASC’s gamekeeper classes on Gundog Day at Crufts 2025.
The Northesk Memorial Trophy, and the title of the Best in Gamekeeping Class, went to Ronevorg Dark Angel At Lussac (Barney) owned by gamekeeper Sue May. Barney was handled on the day by Sue’s friend Helen Ford on the third day of Crufts, Saturday 8 March.
Following a day of intense competition and exceptional performances across BASC’s working dog classes, the event culminated with a final show in the main arena where the top dogs owned by gamekeepers went head-to-head. Ultimately, it was four-years-old Barney who shone brightest to take the title.
Clearly delighted, Sue said: “No words, just tears. I’m so chuffed! We can’t wait for the shooting season but he will spend the summer doing working tests and showing. He’s truly a versatile flat coat – he does it all.”
Barney’s handler, Helen, added: “I’m friends with Sue who owns the dog and we train together. I’m just so pleased I could do him justice.”
Barney, Sue and Helen were presented with their trophy by Caroline Bedell, BASC’s executive director of conservation. Caroline said: “It’s an honour to present the Northesk Memorial Trophy for the first time. The dedication and skill displayed by both the dogs and their handlers were truly inspiring. The gamekeeper’s classes at Crufts highlight the vital role working gundogs play in conservation and gamekeeping.”
BASC’s three rings at Crufts were sponsored by Skinner’s, who also support the BASC gundog programme.
BASC’s head of game and wildlife management, Glynn Evans, said: “Thank you to everyone who took part in the event and congratulations to all of the winners of the gamekeeper and working gundog classes and to Sue, Helen and Barney for claiming the Northesk Memorial Trophy.”
The gamekeepers’ classes are deeply rooted in the history of Crufts and BASC is proud to continue this strong tradition. The event provides a unique platform to showcase how special working gundogs are to tens of thousands of visitors at the greatest dog show.
