Conor O’Gorman encourages people to sign a petition against changes to shotgun licensing rules and to keep sending letters to MPs.
The fight against the impending firearms licensing consultation is gathering pace. The shooting community is rallying together, submitting thousands of emails and letters to MPs and ministers. We can do more.
On 11 December, a petition against the proposals went live on the government website, titled Do not merge section 1 & 2 regulations on firearms licences, and I would encourage everyone to sign it.
With more thank 87,000 signatures to date, support for the petition shows government the intense level of concern in our community in every single constituency nationwide about the damaging impact of merging shotgun and firearms licensing systems. You can see how many signatures have been made in your area from a map on the petition website.
Having breezed past 10,000 signatures, the Home Office will have to give a written response. If the petition hits 100,000 signatures, that will trigger the process for a parliamentary debate on the topic.
That debate would likely be four-to-six months after hitting 100K, maybe longer, but reaching 100K would be a first for the shooting community so it’s important we all make our voices heard.
In addition to signing the petition, please write to your MP if you have not already done so and be assured that this is making a difference in building the political pressure. Remember to point out that there is no evidence to support the proposals.
Let’s rally together as never before and show the government we mean business on this one.
