Children at a North Wales school have been getting involved in practical conservation by building BASC bird boxes for their local area.
BASC staff visited Ysgol Pentre Primary in Wrexham to show the students how to make the nesting boxes from kits.
The children had lots of fun assembling 33 boxes using hammers and nails, under the watchful eye of our team. The boxed have been put up in their own gardens and community spaces, including the school grounds.
School sessions such as this offer a practical way of educating the young people about nature and biodiversity. The children were excited at the prospect of providing nesting homes for songbirds and will be monitoring the boxes to see how they are occupied.
Ysgol Pentre head teacher Kelly Jones said: “Our children took part in a fantastic project with BASC creating bird boxes to take home. They were supported to make the boxes and then had the opportunity to paint them if they wanted. Thank you very much, BASC – we thoroughly enjoyed the experience. We will keep an eye out for birds nesting in our school bird box during forestry school.”
BASC Wales director Steve Griffiths said: “We’re proud to have carried out this practical conservation session with Ysgol Pentre CIW. It’s great to think that there will be BASC bird boxes in gardens throughout the area, supporting local biodiversity and hopefully helping to boost garden bird populations.”
Earlier this year BASC visited Ysgol Acrefair School in North Wales on a similar mission. The BASC Wales team helped pupils in year four to build 28 bird boxes to put up around their neighbourhoods.
