Deer Management Qualification – Humane Animal Dispatch Award
This national qualification is essential in some UK Police forces as a pre-requisite for those involved in supporting the Police at emergency incidents where injured deer are caught up on road networks and within rural or urban environments.
 Why is this qualification important?

- Enhances safety and efficiency in handling wildlife incidents.
Attendance at a course does not guarantee acceptance onto a police HAD scheme, however the qualification is open to all those anyone wishing to extend their knowledge.

In recognition of the increase of deer vehicle collisions involving deer. DMQ have developed in conjunction with the police a Humane Animal Dispatch course. The aim of the course is to promote safe and efficient practice when dealing with Deer Vehicle Collisions (DVCs) where rapid dispatch is the only humane option.
It is a pre-requisite for entry into police led schemes.
The course including assessment is a 1 day course.
The purpose of this certificate is to demonstrate that practitioners in the field of deer management have the skills and knowledge to dispatch deer safely, humanely, and legally on the public highway or in other public settings.
The course is aimed at any person operating in areas where police forces are using volunteer humane animal dispatchers (HADs) as a means of minimising animal suffering whilst maintaining human safety.
Due to the skillset involved in the humane dispatch of deer, there will have to be a significant base knowledge for the target audience of this course.
There will be a prerequisite for all candidates to this course to have completed, as a minimum, the safety and shooting tests for the DSC1 to demonstrate a basic aptitude and safety level with firearms.
Learning Outcomes:
There are 4 main learning outcomes to this certificate, by gaining the qualification the holders will be able to:
- Understand the legal constraints and implications applicable to HAD.
- Understand the physiology and anatomy of deer specific to HAD.
- Understand the effectiveness, risks, benefits and limitations of the various dispatch tools, with specific consideration of firearms safety in public settings.
- Appreciation of site risk assessment, PPE, communications, the decision-making process, planning, execution and review.
The assessments for the certificate are arranged as follows:
Multiple choice test
There will be a single multiple-choice test where candidates will be presented with a total of 20 questions, each with 4 possible answers. The expectation is that they can correctly identify 80% of the correct answers.
There is no time limit for the written paper normally 30 minutes to one hour will suffice.Â
If a candidate fails the written paper they must re-sit a different paper. They may not re-sit the assessment on the same day as they failed the original theory assessment.
The pass mark for this test is 16/20 marks
