Defra has confirmed that the forthcoming Farming Equipment and Technology Fund 2026 (FETF) will include grant support for chiller trailers suitable for storing deer carcasses.

Under the scheme, eligible applicants will be able to access 50 per cent funding towards the purchase of approved chiller trailers. The initiative promises to help deer managers and land managers invest in equipment that supports effective deer control and carcass handling.

According to Defra, the equipment is listed under the productivity items within the fund’s specifications. The scheme is open to applicants in England, with applications accepted from 17 March 2026. Full details of eligible items can be found on the official guidance page.

Martin Edwards, BASC’s head of deer and woodland management, welcomed the inclusion of the equipment in the scheme, saying: “The lack of suitable chilling facilities remains one of the barriers to more efficient deer control, meaning the return of grant support is a positive step for the sector.”

However, he added that it would be beneficial to see a broader range of chiller facilities included in future funding rounds to further support deer management and venison supply chains.

Anyone interested in applying or learning more about the available equipment can view the full list of productivity items on the Defra website.
