How do you put value on a free member benefit? BASC’s executive director of shooting and operations Gareth Dockerty explains.
It is essential that, as a member of staff, I understand what BASC membership truly delivers. What are the benefits of joining or remaining in the organisation, and what is this worth to our members?
I have written about our bespoke, market-leading insurance in the past; however, today I want to focus on our staff and their expertise. Their knowledge and experience are a key part of what sets the organisation apart – but is it possible to put a value on one of the organisation’s unique selling points?
It can be challenging to quantify worth as it depends on what an individual member needs. Perhaps they need firearms support or advice from our conservation team on protected sites, maybe they want BASC to lobby their local MP on the benefits of shooting. It may just be the comfort of knowing that we are meeting ministers in Westminster, Cardiff, Holyrood and Stormont daily.
Our hard work on your behalf and regular lobbying of parliaments is the reason we were mentioned multiple times in the recent firearms debate, and MPs across several parties clearly understood the benefits of legal gun ownership.
To begin my quest to put a value on one of our free member benefits, I need a consistent product that I understand.
Since 2020, BASC has provided free shoot engagement/briefings. Our staff will come and meet your shoot and cut through the jargon, making the confusing world of legislation simple, and we will then support our members to ensure that they can secure their shooting without falling foul of rules and regulations while helping to raise their standards.
I can benchmark this against what other similar organisations charge and I can confidently say this type of bespoke service is worth at least £400 per visit.
Across the UK last year we undertook 402 bespoke shoot engagements, covering protected sites, general licences, the poultry register, dealing with protesters and biosecurity, as well as health and safety advice, to name just a few topics.
This comes to a grand total of £160,800 worth of free support for just one very small part of the day job. I could have chosen our legal challenges, Fighting Fund, evidence and research gathering or multiple product and service offers.
However, sometimes the things we take for granted can hide their true value in plain sight. Because our members often personally know our regional and country teams, and find comfort in their advice and support, we may not stop and think about what this is financially worth.
We are always here to help and have the expertise to deliver.
Just because it is free does not mean it is not worth anything. Please make the most of this service as it is only available to BASC members.
We also offer so much more that you might not even be aware of, so check exactly what you get as a BASC member, and you’ll probably be surprised.

Are you ready to help shape BASC’s future? We’re looking for BASC members to bring their knowledge, passion, and experience to join our governing Council.
