Representatives from BASC Wales attended the launch of Wales’ Wildlife and Rural Crime Strategy 2025-2028 recently, which outlines six priority areas for tackling rural crime.
The event was hosted by Nigel Harrison, deputy chief constable of North Wales Police and the National Police Chiefs’ Council’s lead on wildlife and rural crime, and Rob Taylor, wildlife and rural crime co-ordinator for Wales.
Deputy First Minister for Wales and Cabinet Secretary for Climate Change, Huw Irranca-Davies MS, was a keynote speaker.
The focus of the conference was the launch of Wales’ Wildlife and Rural Crime Strategy 2025-2028. The strategy adopts a comprehensive ‘4P’ approach – prepare, prevent, pursue and protect – to tackle wildlife and rural crime.
The new strategy outlines six priority areas:
BASC is proud to sit on many of the target groups in these strategic areas to ensure that our 150,000 members and our community have a voice.
The launch event was a great success, with attendees including representatives from all four police forces and key stakeholders in Wales. The four forces’ rural crime teams presented updates on operations and other input.
BASC Wales engagement manager David Boden said: “We understand the impact that rural and wildlife crime can have on Wales. Poaching, theft and and other illegal activities cause serious disruption and, often, significant distress, within the shooting community and the wider rural sector. It is essential BASC collaborates with Rob Taylor and local police forces to safeguard the livelihoods and businesses of our members.”
Rob Taylor said: “The release of the new 2025-2028 Wales’ Wildlife and Rural Crime Strategy builds on the foundations of the previous strategy, that has seen many focused successes across Wales. We look forward to continuing to work alongside our colleagues at BASC and other organisations to ensure that we deliver the best available response to our Welsh rural communities, wildlife and habitats.”
