Role information

The nature recovery advisor is a new role and will be at the forefront of BASC’s growth and work for sustainable shooting. The successful candidate will work in building relationships with clubs, the provision of in-house ecology services to departments and members, quantifying bio-diversity outputs, developing and communicating site management plans, planning and delivering training, and engaging our stakeholders.

Key accountabilities and responsibilities

  1. Provide an informed and specialist point of contact for BASC departments, public bodies and relevant stakeholders, BASC members and the wider shooting and rural communities, in relation to the role that sustainable shooting and conservation activities has for nature recovery
  2. Develop and promote defined services on relevant issues, especially to members who shoot across the protected site network.
  3. Provided technical support to the BASC Wildlife Fund.
  4. Provide specialist advice to BASC departments and members to ensure that ecological and nature recovery matters are given due weight in the consenting and management plan process, and that decisions are fully informed by your knowledge and experience.
  5. Work with BASC departments to identify knowledge and evidence gaps, research and work with colleagues to look for ways to fill these.
  6. Work strategically, proactively and collaboratively with stakeholders and partners to identify and secure opportunities to deliver gains on shooting related habitats.
  7. Contribute to the formulation of policy on regulatory issues, and how shooting and land managed for shooting can contribute to nature recovery.
  8. Contribute to work related to government consultations, as appropriate.
  9. As a positive ambassador, represent BASC at liaison groups and other forums as required and as appropriate to job role.
  10. Act as a spokesperson for the association on relevant habitat-related issues.
  11. Work in close consultation with other teams, including regional and country teams, in relation to land management, to ensure they are correctly informed on key issues, and delivery of workflows, events and activities are completed.
  12. Provide advice on communications relating to land management and other appropriate areas, including providing content for BASC’s members’ magazine, website and other publications.
  13. Take responsibility for overseeing relevant sections of the BASC website, intranet and other electronic communications.
  14. Provide support across departments as and when requested by the head of land management and consenting, which may occur from time to time.
ExperienceEssential skills, knowledge and achievements

Degree or equivalent professional qualification or experience.

The individual we are seeking will have been working in a relevant sector e.g. conservation and/or land management for a minimum of three years.

Experience of handling and interpreting data ideally knowledge of the analytical process behind the use of WeBS data in assessing wildfowl populations and trends on designated sites.

Experience of writing technical management or conservation reports and plans for sites.

Experience of accurate use of Microsoft Office packages including Word, Outlook and Excel.

Experience of project management with multiple deadlines within the conservation, land management or coastal management sector.

Experience of providing a high standard of service to customers, ideally within the land management / conservation sector.

GIS experience (MapInfo).

Experience with using the BNG metric.

A good understanding of priority habitats and species, particularly coastal and wetland birds and/or uplands including habitat assessment and management.

Knowledge of the legislation giving regulatory and enforcement powers including the Wildlife & Countryside Act, Environmental Damage Regulations and the Conservation of Habitats and Species Regulations.

Strong organisational skills.

Strong inter-personal skills and the ability to manage conflict.

An eye for detail and accuracy.

Time management, ability to plan ahead and prioritise to achieve set or agreed deadlines.

Good communication through a variety of medium, coordinate well internally, diplomacy and negotiating skills, especially when working with key stakeholders.

General requirements

BASC head office is based in Marford Mill, Rossett, with country and regional offices across the UK.

We have an agile working approach, with our core hours being between 8.30 – 5.30 Monday to Friday. We do expect some weekend and out-of-hours working to support our membership engagement. Your working hours are stated in your contact of employment.

You are expected to be flexible, agile and willing to undertake any other duties that may be reasonable required.
