Role information

Assist the Director Wales and the wider Wales team to educate and inform Senedd members, prospective candidates, local politicians and opinion formers about shooting sports and help forge relationships between them and BASC clubs, syndicates and members.
To support and assist with the political engagement programme in Wales and the day-to-day management and delivery of a programme of activities within Wales, that has the ability to further improve political engagement in Wales.

Key accountabilities and responsibilities

  1. To assist the Director Wales and support the engagement manager Wales with the political relations programme. Especially as the Senedd reforms, meaning there will be an extra 36 Senedd members.
  2. Support the positive messages of shooting sports in general and BASC across assembly members, assembly ministers, prospective assembly member candidates, local politicians and opinion formers.
  3. Liaise with country and/or regional teams of other country sports organisations, governmental and non-governmental organisations, as well as political party structures in Wales.
  4. Build and maintain relationships with BASC affiliated clubs and syndicates in Wales.
  5. Assist with the development and implementation of a political contact programme for BASC Wales especially regarding ambassadors.
  6. Lead andsupport on shoot engagement across Wales delivering shoot visits.
  7. Membership development programme including the following:
      • Deliver projects and activities encouraging membership retention and recruitment
      • Build and maintain relations with BASC affiliated clubs and syndicates and trade members
      • Organisation and delivery of a programme of membership events, including Young Shots and sustainable ammunition, promoting game as healthy food through activities and other events
      • Proactively pursuing other membership engagement opportunities
      • Support set-up and display of BASC Wales stand at all shows
      • Attend and support Eat Game events and activities
  8. Forge links between BASC clubs, syndicates and trade members with country or regional parliamentarians, prospective parliamentary candidates, local politicians and opinion formers to ensure that the latter are well briefed and supportive of shooting sports.
  9. In liaison with BASC Wales team, produce briefing documents on shooting-related issues for ambassadors.
  10. Assist on producing analytical and strategic responses to a wide range of relevant public consultations in Wales.
  11. Maintain a database of country and regional political contacts and manage ambassadors’ data and information re political engagement.
  12. Identify key Wales political contacts and others to be briefed, individually or in groups.
  13. Assist with the programme of introducing key political contacts to shooting and BASC’s work in conservation where appropriate.
  14. Assist with BASC’s party conference programme where a conference is held in Wales.
  15. Contribute to BASC publications on BASC political activities as appropriate.
  16. Engaging the general public to normalise shooting sports and game as food. Including engagement with school and youth groups such as Scouts and Young Farmers’ Clubs.
  17. Help to provide a one-stop-shop for responding to enquiries and where necessary signposting to the appropriate person at head office or other regional or country centre.
  18. From time to time provide a point of contact for public media and identifying stories for publication in liaison with the head office communications team in doing so.
  19. Ensure all relevant administrative and financial management tasks are carried out to a high standard and in compliance with regulatory standards such as those imposed by the FCA. The role includes responsibility for taking customer payments and handling cash.
  20. Attend meetings at head office or elsewhere, as appropriate.
  21. Ensure that all relevant policies, procedures and working practices are adhered to at all times and work in accordance with the association’s culture, values, aims and objectives.
  22. Home-based, with regular travel to head office and across Wales.
ExperienceEssential skills, knowledge and achievements

Experience in political affairs work

Demonstrable experience in countryside skills such as game keeping, practical conservation, biodiversity, guns and shooting disciplines

Experience of developing and implementing projects to meet business targets on time and within budget

Experience in a similar organisation

Experience of building effective partnerships with politicians and stakeholders

Experience with bodies connected with environmental and rural development

Experience of representing an organisation with members/customers and other key stakeholders

Personal shooting experience

Excellent team player

Able to work flexibly

Enthusiastic and approachable

Analytical skills, ability to demonstrate sound judgement on complex and sensitive issues

Results driven yet collaborative approach

Thorough understanding of national, and international legislative processes linked to sporting shooting

Aptitude for political engagement

Focussed and output driven

Knowledge of shooting and conservation terminology

Good communication (written and oral), diplomacy and negotiating skills, especially when working with politicians. Min Level one Welsh

Problem-solving skills – able to work on own initiative

Sound judgement, initiative and sustained drive

Knowledge of a wide range of countryside skills; e.g., gamekeeping, conservation, firearms, shooting disciplines

Able to work as an excellent ambassador for BASC

General requirements

BASC head office is based in Marford Mill, Rossett, with country and regional offices across the UK.

We have an agile working approach, with our core hours being between 8.30 – 5.30 Monday to Friday. We do expect some weekend and out-of-hours working to support our membership engagement. Your working hours are stated in your contract of employment.

You are expected to be flexible, agile and willing to undertake any other duties that may be reasonably required.

All our employees must always act as positive ambassadors for the association when dealing with members or representing the association in other ways.
