General licences grant permission to control some pest bird species. These are issued by each devolved nation.Â
Where a species or situation is not covered by a relevant general licence, an individual or specific (Wales) licence can be applied for from the relevant statutory agency to control those species not on the general licences. These licences are granted on a case-by-case basis.Â
In England you can also register to use a class licence for activities that need specific skill or experience to avoid risk to the conservation or welfare of a protected species.
For any individual licence, you are advised to apply in plenty of time as they can take some time to be processed, depending on the agency and type of application.

As a game shooter who attends a game shoot what you do (or don’t do) can significantly affect biosecurity.

Good biosecurity helps protect biodiversity, uphold high standards of gamebird and wildlife management, and safeguard the long-term future of game shooting and the rural communities whose livelihoods are closely linked to them.
