BASC response to bird of prey persecution sentencing

BASC has reiterated its position on bird of prey persecution following the sentencing of a gamekeeper today at York Magistrates Court.

The organisation confirmed that the individual sentenced was not a BASC member, and that behaviour of this nature by any member would result in immediate expulsion.

BASC head of uplands Alex Farrell said: “As an organisation, we have been consistent in our condemnation of any form of wildlife crime. It is cruel, callous and has absolutely no place in the shooting community. We have a zero-tolerance approach to wildlife crime and to anyone who brings shooting into disrepute through illegal or unethical behaviour.

“This was the action of someone acting illegally and does not reflect the standards followed by the overwhelming majority of keepers and land managers.”

BASC said wildlife crime undermines conservation, damages public confidence and harms the reputation of responsible shooting and land management.

The organisation continues to work with members, enforcement agencies and government to promote high standards and full compliance with the law.
