Wildfowling clubs – Data protection law

Clubs holding members information-shotgun certificates an update.

Further to the article in the March/ April 2016 Shooting & Conservation magazine, BASC is working with the National Crime Agency on security of firearms in all scenarios to ensure that we maintain the current reasonable security laws and raise awareness of current provisions.

Data protection law requires all clubs and friendly societies to gather only necessary information for the administration of membership.

Accordingly it is not necessary for clubs to request copies or sight of shotgun certificates, passports or driving licences from members.

Holding onto certificate data or copies could lead to their theft or loss resulting in targeted thefts. As such BASC advises clubs to destroy archived certificate data/copies.
