‘Strong support’ for shooting at the heart of cabinet, says BASC

The Secretary of State for Scotland, the Rt Hon Alister Jack MP, has affirmed his support for shooting following a key meeting with BASC yesterday.

BASC’s political and press officer in Scotland, Ross Ewing, met with the Secretary of State in Westminster to discuss the recommendations of the Werritty Review into grouse moor management and medical involvement in firearms licensing.

The Secretary of State was sympathetic to our concerns about grouse moor licensing and has offered to work with us going forward to provide support where he can. On medical certification, the Secretary of State agrees with our concerns surrounding variable costs and conscientious objection, and is willing to help improve the current system.

Speaking on completion of the meeting, Ross Ewing said: “Our productive meeting with the Secretary of State has shown that there is strong support for shooting at the heart of the UK Government.

“The Secretary of State’s integral understanding of grouse moor management and medical certification makes him a strong ally for BASC at a time where both areas are facing challenges.

“We would like to thank the Secretary of State for taking the time to meet with us, and we look forward to working with him going forward.”
